Let me begin with a simple question! What measures do you take to look good?
The expression, looking good, is very generic. It refers to several facets of everyday actions. Most of us relate the expression to physical form of body. However, it’s the psyche that formulates the well-being of self from within. A strong psychological prosperity is immune to several ill-effects of modern-day lifestyle. While there are several measures to achieve a healthy mental stability, the role of cycling has got far reaching positive implications. More than ever, with the rise in the COVID-19 related restrictions on free movement, the importance of mental health is a priority. So, how does cycling help improve one’s mental well-being?
THREE MAJOR HEALTH BENEFITS OF CYCLING:
- Cycling involves both physical and psychological aspects. On the physical front, cycling improves fitness and helps build toned muscles. On the psychological front, pedaling helps get rid of anxiety and stress. When your body experiences anxiety/stress, it releases a hormone known as Cortisol. This hormone prepares your body to fight against the stressful situations. Although that sounds nice, an elevated level of cortisol for an extended period can lead to obesity, digestive issues and among others. Cycling helps relieve any anxiety/stress.
- I have heard people taking medications for keeping anxiety/stress at bay. Believe me the moment you get on the saddle and start riding; you begin feeling better. This is due to the phenomenon of the release of Endorphin – a chemical that your body releases as a natural painkiller.
- Cycling improves concentration. When you are out cycling, it is important to concentrate on what you are doing at any moment throughout your ride. The magic of cycling is that this becomes a natural process. Cycling epitomizes this process of concentration. You don’t have to explicitly do anything other than constant pedaling. It’s a perfect example of connecting both body and mind!
What else can be more exciting than a social activity? When you meet and ride with like-minded people, the levels of endorphin in the body helps keep your mental health at its highest stability!
