Rekindling My Love for the IAF at Chennai’s Record-Breaking Air Show

Growing up, I always harbored a deep desire to join the armed forces, with a particular fascination for the Indian Air Force. As a teenager and well into my early 20s, my dream was to soar through the skies in the blue uniform. However, life had other plans, leading me to pursue a career in Information Technology. Despite this shift, my enthusiasm for the Air Force has remained steadfast.

One of my most unforgettable experiences tied to this dream was back in 2003, when an air show was held in Chennai. Overwhelmed by excitement, I approached the staff at my school to request permission to take my entire class to the event, and I was delighted when the principal granted my request. What I witnessed that day—the mesmerizing maneuvers of the aircraft and the thunderous roars of the jets—further fueled my love for aviation. That event made a lasting impression on me, even though my career path took a different direction.

92ND AIR FORCE DAY CELEBRATIONS:

Fast forward 21 years, and in 2024, the Indian Air Force returned to Chennai for their 92nd Air Force Day celebrations. A lot had changed since that first air show, but one thing remained constant: my love for the Air Force. This time, however, I had an additional passion—photography. Over the years, my interest in photography had grown by leaps and bounds, and I had cultivated a keen eye for capturing professional-grade images.

This air show presented the perfect opportunity to merge these two passions—aviation and photography. With 72 aircraft taking part, the event showcased a stunning display that secured a spot in the Limca Book of World Records. Before the show began, I was determined to capture every breathtaking moment with my camera. Weeks of preparation went into planning for this mega event. I was engaged in comprehensive preparation, diligently investigating camera settings, identifying optimal shooting locations, and ensuring that I was completely prepared for the forthcoming rapid action. My objective was to attain results that were nothing less than extraordinary.

On the day of the event and the days when the rehearsals were performed, thousands of Chennaiites gathered at the iconic Marina Beach, despite the sultry weather, to witness this aerial extravaganza. The air above the city was alive with the sights and sounds of the IAF’s most advanced aircraft, including the formidable Rafale and the indigenously built Tejas, showcasing their power and precision. The aerial display was a vivid demonstration of the IAF’s prowess and maneuverability, captivating everyone who had come to witness the spectacle.

For me, the highlight of the event was the performances by my personal favorites: the Suryakiran aerobatics team and the Sarang helicopter display team. The Suryakiran aerobatic team, with their vibrant red and white jets, performed synchronized aerial maneuvers that were nothing short of breathtaking. The precision with which they looped and spun through the sky left the spectators spellbound. On the other hand, the Sarang team, with their beautifully decorated helicopters, performed intricate formations and daring moves, each one a testament to the skill and bravery of their pilots. Their elegance and agility made for some truly stunning photographs.

THE ART OF TIMING: BALANCING COMPOSITION & SPEED

Photographing an air show presents a unique set of challenges, especially when dealing with incredibly fast-moving aircrafts at low altitudes. The sultry weather added an extra layer of difficulty, making it essential to stay hydrated, focused and attentive. Every shot required complete focus, and timing was critical. These jets move so fast that even a fraction of a second could be the difference between a perfect shot and a missed opportunity. I had to be proficient with my camera settings, ensuring the right balance of shutter speed and ISO to obtain the desired results. Positioning myself at the right spot played a key role in getting the best angles, as a slight miscalculation in angle could mean losing the shot. The key aspects were staying in the moment and being constantly aware of the space around. Deciding when to zoom in for close-ups of maneuvers or zoom out to capture the entire scene involved split-second decisions. The speed of the aircrafts limited the room for error, but it also opened exciting artistic possibilities. Every shot was dedicated effort, combining technical skill, patience, and a bit of creative vision.

Every photograph showcases the power and precision of the IAF while also telling the story of my personal journey—from aspiring to be an Air Force officer to evolving into an IT professional who channels his enthusiasm through photography. Though life led me to a different path, my admiration for the Air Force remains strong. Events like this air show serve as a reminder that some dreams never truly fade, they simply evolve.

The Indian Air Force’s display in Chennai was not just a celebration of its strength and agility, but also a reflection of its legacy. With nearly 72 aircraft flying in perfect harmony and a record-breaking performance in the works, this air show will remain etched in the memories of those who witnessed it, much like it has stayed with me since 2003.
