Ever since I gifted myself a decent camera, about 10 years ago, I have travelled extensively across the length and width of our beautiful country. I picked genres that didn’t require much interactions, rather quality time. I was particularly interested in Nature and Wildlife Photography. A few years into my travel, I was happy to see the stunning collection of Himalayan landscapes in my kitty. Don’t miss the many fascinating blogs on my Himalayan adventures here on my website!
TRANSITION FROM LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY:
With the passage of time and proficiency handling a mid-range Digital SLR, there was an intense desire to explore the wildlife hotspots in the country. Capturing landscape is a different play of art, while that of wildlife involves several other aspects too. Hence, before embarking on any wildlife photography trips, I wanted to get acquainted with Ethology. Ethology is the study of animal behaviour. After two years of considerable time gaining knowledge on behavioral traits of several species, I tried my hands with wildlife photography at the hot-and-humid lands of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) in Maharashtra. And, I was glad to put my knowledge and camera proficiency to good use. I returned home with some-great and some-satisfactory images. Here’s the link to my blog.
FASCINATION FOR BIRD WATCHING AND PHOTOGRAPHY:
Just as my portfolio of wildlife images were taking shape, I happen to discover my expanding horizons. Thanks to Social Media! I have been drooling over numerous photos of fascinating birds on Instagram and select Facebook Groups. I was impressed by the many avian species. As my social circle began to grow, I got introduced to few avid birders with a comprehensive knowledge on the many bird species. Weeks later, I landed buying a book on basic ornithology. Ornithology is the scientific study of birds. A few months later, my friend and I met for a birding trip down south!
It was the pleasantly cold winters of peninsular India. And, we were a group of five passionate birders, both a mix of rookie and amateurs, meeting each other at the town of Aluva in Kerala. This was an ideal window of opportunity for a visit to this popular bird sanctuary. The Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is popular among the birders. This is because of its relatively smaller area (25 square kilometres) and high density of bird population. Established in the year 1983, Thattekad was the first bird sanctuary of Kerala. Thettakad, literally, means flat forest and the region is an evergreen lowland forest!
MAGNIFICENT COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS:
Without any further ado, here’s a handpicked collection of 50 magnificent photographs from the beautiful bird sanctuary in peninsular India!
This trip to Thattekad will remain etched in my memory for years. The first ever time, I got an opportunity to observe and photograph several bird species in proximity. At the end of the trip, I had recorded a whopping 60 different bird species. This is truly satisfying!
